About

Del Norte High School (DNHS) is a part of the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) in San Diego County, California.  DNHS was constructed in 2009 and is the last high school to be build in PUSD.

DNHS Mission has 3 main principals.

  • International Emphasis
  • Academic Rigor
  • Student-Centered Learning

DNHS is one of just a few high schools with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, along with its full array of Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

Situated in the Rancho Bernardo area, DNHS has been able to pull from area high schools and middle schools to comprise its student body that have the desire to learn and do more while in high school.  DNHS program is to prepare its student's for college and the global world.

Science Olympiad is a national science competition for middle and high schools.  Students compete in multiple "events" (typically 23 per competition) that may be academic in nature or physical devices that are built by the students (AKA building events).  Science Olympiad mission is to create a passion for learning through tournaments.

Science Olympiad has been going on since 1984.  It now has over 5700 teams in 48 states.  Events are changed each year to continually provide a challenge to each returning team.

There are three main competitions per year.  Schools compete locally at a regional competition.  San Diego's regional competition is typically held in February and is the largest in the nation.  Winners of the regional competition are invited to the Southern California State competition.  California splits their state competition into a northern and southern competition.  The one winner from the northern and southern state competition moves onto the national competition typically held at a university back East.

Science Olympiad is a perfect extension to the DNHS principals and academic pursuits.

To provide encouragement and focus, DNHS SO program is to increase a students exposure to science and engineering in a cooperative competitive objective.  Science Olympiad is a team competition no different than athletic teams except for that students train for several months and are given one opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the subject.
